The Beaches of Helsinki: Mustikkamaa
Mustikkamaa is one of my favourite streets in Helsinki. A large and well-equipped beach is right next to the city centre. But a trip through Kulosaari to the archipelago forcibly "breaks away from everyday life". Nowadays, you can also get to Mustikkamaa via the new "Isoisänsilta" bridge..
Korkeasaari Zoo is walking distance away from this beach.
Both showers and changing rooms are available. The beach is well maintained.
A special feature of Mustikkamaa is that the beach, the small grassy area and the footpath are separated by an embankment.
The beach is very long, although only about half of it is kept in 'bathing condition' by spreading sand on the beach, etc. But there is plenty of space.
At the eastern end of the island is an old café building, I believe.
There are several, smaller "little restaurants" to the south-west of the official beach.
New city districk Kalasatama is growing fast..
These coves are good places to hang out too.
