Viewpoints in Espoo

Espoo viewpoints - illustration.

In the Espoo viewpoints series, I will introduce both well-known and lesser-known viewpoints in Espoo. There are plenty. Feel free to tip me off about new, photo-worthy spots. Espoo is Finlands second biggest city located in the Helsinki region.

A viewpoint is a somewhat tricky concept, but I consider it to be a place that is slightly elevated compared to its surroundings, offering a good view in at least one direction, and is at least partially public (such as a café). Therefore, the closed sauna on the top floor of an apartment building does not qualify, as it is not a viewpoint for the rest of us.

Viewpoints in Espoo: Laajalahti Birdwatching Tower

The Villa Elfvik nature tower is located in Laajalahti, in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve. This picture shows the unique feature of the birdwatching tower: both the path to the tower and the access to the lowest platform are accessible.

Viewpoints in Espoo: Jäniskallio in Nuuksio

A somewhat surprising viewpoint in Espoo can be found on the shore of Nuuksion Pitkäjärvi. On the west side of the lake is Jäniskallio. The hill doesn't seem very high when you climb it, but you reach a surprisingly high point, and the views are quite impressive.

Viewpoints in Espoo: Stora Herrö observation tower

Welcome to one of the finest places in Espoo. The Stora Herrö lookout tower offers stunning views. The tower is situated on a rock, and the scenery opens up in nearly all directions. Stora Herrö can be reached by archipelago boat in the summer. Here is a picture of the tower looking almost directly northeast. In the foreground on the right is Rövargrundet
